Experience Dallas

In the late 1970s, the TV soap opera Dallas and the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders seemed to crystallize Dallas's public image: big hair, super-sized cowboy hats, towering skyscrapers, larger-than-life oil tycoons.

Indeed, today, Dallas—whose motto is "Live Large, Think Big"—seems to be bursting with possibilities.

One of the country's largest metropolitan areas, and an economic and cultural center of the Southwest, Dallas boasts more shopping centers per capita than any U.S. city1, and it's one of the few cities to have teams from all seven professional sports leagues2.

In addition, the city's numerous parks, lakes, and golf courses offer ample recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.

Of particular note to culinary school students and graduates is the city's hospitality industry. Dallas has more restaurants per capita than New York City2, and, on average, Dallasites eat out about four times a week—one of the highest rates in the country3.

The five-star Mansion on Turtle Creek, located in the city's upscale Oak Lawn neighborhood, was named the top hotel in the country by Zagat4.

Likewise, The French Room at The Adolphus in downtown Dallas was recent chosen by Zagat as America's best hotel restaurant5.

And while Dallas is famous for its barbecue and Tex-Mex fare—and as the birthplace of the frozen margarita—it's become something of a culinary melting pot, with restaurants featuring Indian, Italian, Middle Eastern, and other world cuisines.

Other Dallas attractions include:

  • Dallas Cowboys NFL football team
  • Highland Park Village, one of America's oldest shopping centers
  • Fair Park, home of the Cotton Bowl football stadium and the annual State Fair of Texas
  • Dallas Arts District, the largest designated area of its kind in the United States2
  • Dallas Farmers Market, one of the largest open-air markets in the country
  • The Galleria
  • Uptown, featuring restaurants, galleries, antique stores, and more
  • Dallas Mavericks NBA basketball team
  • Texas Rangers major league baseball team, based in Arlington
  • Dallas Stars NHL hockey team
  • John F. Kennedy Memorial
  • Southfork Ranch, featured in the TV show Dallas, located north of the city
